What is an avalanche or blizzard? An avalanche happens when snow gets loose on a mountain because a lot of snow has built up. Then the snow starts sliding down the mountain and creates an Avalanche. A blizzard happens when it starts to snow really hard during a storm and you can’t see. What do you do if you get caught? When there is an avalanche coming, you can try to get to the side of it or grab a tree and hang on until it stops. If you are caught by a blizzard, then hurry to the nearest shelter. Why are they dangerous? The danger of an avalanche is that the snow could fall on someone and they could get badly hurt or could even die. The danger of a blizzard is that someone could get caught in one and freeze to death or get bad frostbite. How do they form? Blizzards form from water that evaporates into the air and freezes. Then it snows in a terrible snowstorm with blowing winds and freezing temperatures. Avalanches form from snow that piles onto a mountain and slides down. |
